Internet Archive Switzerland Launches Gen AI Archive and Endangered Archives Initiative

Internet Archive Switzerland, a Swiss foundation based in St. Gallen, announced its launch on 5 May 2026 and unveiled two major initiatives. The first, the Gen AI Archive, is a partnership with the University of St. Gallen to preserve today’s most advanced AI models for future generations, ensuring that the rapid evolution of LLMs is documented and accessible. The second initiative, Endangered Archives, works with UNESCO and other organisations to rescue vulnerable cultural and historical collections threatened by conflict, disaster, or suppression. The foundation’s mission is to provide universal access to all knowledge, aligning with the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Sustainable Development Goal 4. The launch event was held at the Abbey Archives of St. Gallen, a millennium‑old institution that underscores the long‑term vision of the project.
